Traveling to Puerto Rico after a hurricane isn't a typical dream vacation for a 30th anniversary celebration. This adventure trip, adapted to volunteer with the humanitarian service organization The Happy Givers, gave us a sneak peak into the kind of travel experience we plan to make a permanent aspect of our midlife, as we prepare to explore the world as overland nomadic travelers. But was it a bad idea to go to Puerto Rico after hurricane Fiona?

We quit our jobs and are selling everything (including our beautiful Montana home) to become full-time global overlanders. We are only in our early 50's, (so maybe it's a version of a midlife crisis) but we are taking a huge risk and leaving the American dream to become nomadic explorers. The first adventure of our early retirement will be a long road trip along the Pan American Highway.
